Chapter Fourteen

“What’s wrong with you?” Lily asks. She’s placed herself on the sofa in my office.

“Don’t you have somewhere to be? Like aren’t there sharks or some shit calling out for you?” I counter. My sister is studying marine biology. She’s bloody smart as hell and loves ocean critters more than anything else in this world.

“Nope, I cleared my schedule for you.”

“In case you didn’t notice, I’m actually working here, Lil. Can’t we do this later?” I groan.

“Nope. So, what’s happening with Chase?”

“Nothing’s happening with Chase,” I deny. I don’t want to share whatever is happening, not with anyone. It’s bad enough that my parents and Ash know some of the details.

“That’s not what it looked like the other night when he took you home. You know, from the date you were meant to be on with someone else.”

“He saw I was upset and drove me home. That’s it.”

My twin tilts her head at me. “You’ve done stuff. With him. What’d you do? Was it good?”

“I am not discussing this with you right now, Lily. I have phone calls to make. Work to do. Go bother Mum or Dad.”

“They’re not here. They already left.”

I screw my eyebrows together. I didn’t know they were gone already. That explains why my sister is here. My parents hate us being alone in the gym. They always seem to have a way of making sure neither of us is here without another family member. “Well, go run on a treadmill or something. Leave me alone so I can finish up.”

“Argh, fine. But when my butt looks better than yours, don’t complain to me about it.” She pauses mid-step. “Oh, want to drive up to Aunt Ella’s together next week?”

Shit, it’s Christmas literally next week. “Ah, I’m not sure yet.”

“Well, after you check with Chase, let me know.”

“I don’t need to check anything with Chase, Lil. Close my door behind you.” As soon as she’s out of sight, I pull out my phone and message Chase. We’ve spent every night together for the past week. I haven’t slept in my own bed since that awkward breakfast with my parents. I also haven’t spoken to Ash since then either. He’s tried calling, and I’ve declined every single one.

Me: Christmas is next week.

I don’t even bother putting my phone down. Every time I message Chase, he always replies right away. And today is no different.

Chase: I’m aware.

Me: What are your plans?

Chase: Are you asking me on a date on Christmas Day, babe? I know your father, and as much as he loves me, he would not be okay with anyone taking his daughter away from him during his favourite holiday.

Me: No, idiot. I mean are you going to the beach house?

Chase has spent a few Christmases with us over the years, so it’s not an unusual question. It’s not like I’m asking him to spend the holiday with me and my family. My phone vibrates in my hand, and Chase’s face fills the screen. A face I could spend hours staring at.
